The work focuses on one thing: keeping Story alive —
from the first page to the final cut.
THE AFF PHILOSOPHY
As actors, directors, and writers, we're constantly inundated by coaches, gurus, and consultants telling us what we need to know, who we need to be, and what we must do to succeed. Beneath all this advice there's often an unsettling feeling. Trust that feeling. What they are telling you won't work. Deep down you already know this. You might pick up a few facts ABOUT your craft, but you will not learn how to be a better or more successful artist.
The ninth-century Chinese monk Linji Yixuan said it best:
"If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him."
Here's why that matters. Telling you something engages the rational, intellectual, analytical part of your mind. Your artistry doesn't live there. It lives in the creative, irrational, imaginative, intuitive part of your mind. C.G. Jung understood this deeply:
"The knowledge of the heart is in no book and is not found in the mouth of any teacher, but grows out of you
like a green seed from the dark earth."
That part already knows everything you need to know to be an extraordinary actor, director, or writer. And it learns in only one way: by doing. You will grow as an artist by doing it day after day. Not talking about it. Not analyzing it. Doing it.
If what you do is something you truly feel compelled to do — something you must pursue no matter what — it's not a career. It's your calling. And if you're called to be a storyteller, you arrived here with everything you need to fulfill that calling. Your calling is uniquely yours. No one else will ever tell a story exactly as you do. Because you are infinitely different from every other artist in the world, no one can ever do what you do. The idea that a single technique, process, or method could work for every actor, director, or writer is not just wrong. It's ridiculous.
In AFF workshops and coaching sessions, you discover your unique approach by getting up and actually doing it. My role is not to lecture or impose one way of doing things. To coach. To guide. To support you as you find your own way.
"Story is how the human heart changes."
Acting, directing, and writing are all storytelling. Storytelling is humanity's most powerful art form — it touches hearts, changes lives, and shapes the world.
